Nurses trained in countries not part of the European Economic Area must gain professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council before working as a nurse in the UK. There are two parts to this process, including computer based and practical exams. Ashton Care offers a supervised practice programme for international registered nurses interested in working at nursing jobs UK.
This requirement is intended to ensure competency in nurses and allow international nursing candidates to develop the skills needed to safely and effectively provide patient care. In the meantime, nurses can work in UK supervised practice placements.
Nurses must meet standards for competencies in:
The first step for international nurse applicants is to pass a computer test and meet the language requirements to be eligible to take the OSCE exam. The practical Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) clinical exam must be taken in the UK. Applicants who have passed the initial computer exam and requirements can come to the UK prepare for the exam, if they have an offer of employment and certificate of sponsorship.
This allows international nurses to undergo a three period of supervised practice prior to taking the OSCE exam and working unsupervised as a registered nurse in the UK. There is a three month limit from the date of employment to sit for the exam. Applicants can take the exam up to three times, if they are not successful on the first exam.
